A Community of practice is A voluntary group of peer practitioners who share lessons learned methods and best practices in a given discipline or for specialized work. The term also refers to a networks of people who work on similar processes or in similar disciplines, and who come together to develop and share their knowledge in that field for the benefit of both themselves and their organization(s).
Summary
Communities of practice include any group of individuals that make a collaborative effort to improve their practice. As a minimum the group must be sustainable beyond the completion of any particular task or project, survive organisational restructuring and include a core of experts.
