Definition

An internal organizational website to provide a central access point to all information in the organization, including links to various repositories, databases, document archives etc., and communication means for collaboration

Purpose & benefits

An intranet portal can easily add users and groups, integrates with other applications, keeps a log of all activities, and the security model is easy to set up and maintain. They provide one point of entry into an organization's knowledge, information, systems, and processes, facilitating communication and sharing of knowledge when they are done well.

Description

An intranet portal provides a framework for the organisation to have a single point of access to a variety of information and tools. It may or may not be customisable by the user so that they see information that is specific to their needs. Portals integrate with other applications and provide development capabilities that are flexible and extensible; they should be able to easily add users and groups and provide a security model that is easy to set up and maintain. Portals allow for easy, consistent, standardised messaging to go out across the organisation.

Variations

The terms intranet portal, intranet, and portal are often used interchangeably.
